Softball Players of the Week Colorado State's Lauren Cusick and San Diego State's Christina Ross honored
Feb. 19, 2008 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Colorado State senior third baseman Lauren Cusick and San Diego State senior lefthander Christina Ross have been named Mountain West Conference Softball Player and Pitcher of the Week, respectively. Cusick, from Salem, Ore., helped Colorado State to a 5-0 record in Week 2, on the way to a Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces Classic championship. In five starts, she hit .571 (12-for-21), including three doubles, a triple and four home runs. Cusick also plated seven RBI and scored 12 runs. During the tournament, she registered four multiple-hit games, with three hits in three of those games. In the Rams' tournament opener vs. UT-Arlington, the senior doubled, tripled and homered in consecutive at-bats, finishing a single shy of the cycle. She continued her hitting streak vs. North Dakota State, smashing two home runs and a double. Defensively, Cusick recorded a perfect fielding percentage with two putouts and 13 assists on the weekend. The MVP of the tournament, Cusick is currently riding an eight-game hit streak, with five multiple-hit games, in the season's first 10 contests.
Ross, a Santa Clarita, Calif., native, pitched San Diego State to a perfect 4-0 record last week with a 0.58 ERA to lead the Aztecs to their first-ever Campbell/Cartier Classic title. She appeared in all four contests and tossed two complete games. In 24 innings, Ross struck out 18 batters against three walks, limiting her opponents to a .186 batting average. The lefthander started the game versus Indiana and only allowed one infield single through five innings of shutout play. The following day, Ross pitched five innings of scoreless relief against Tulsa, allowing one hit while striking out three. In Saturday's nightcap, she struck out a season-high 10 Fresno State batters en route to a 3-2 victory, before capturing the tourney crown on Sunday with a 4-1 win over UC Santa Barbara.
