Mountain West Announces Weekly Softball Awards
Nevada's Karley Hopkins, San Diego State's Lorena Bauer and Rebecca Arbino honored

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - Nevada junior infielder Karley Hopkins and San Diego State junior utility player Lorena Bauer have been named Mountain West Softball Co-Players of the Week, while San Diego State senior righthander Rebecca Arbino earns the MW Pitcher of the Week award for games through February 10. This is the third career MW weekly accolade for Arbino, second for Bauer and first for Hopkins.
Hopkins recorded five multi-hit games as Nevada posted a 3-2 record at the Red Desert Classic in St. George, Utah, over the weekend. Batting from the leadoff position, the Sparks, Nev., native went 14-for-20 (.700) at the plate with three doubles and one walk during the five-game span. She drove in four runs and scored nine more, while adding two stolen bases. On Friday, Hopkins opened tournament play with a 3-for-5 performance in a 14-6 win over BYU, tallying three RBI, four runs scored and two doubles. She was perfect at the plate against Idaho State later that day, driving in one run, scoring once and stealing two bases in the 5-4 loss. On Saturday, Hopkins went 3-for-4 with three runs scored, one double and one walk as the Wolf Pack defeated Weber State, 13-7. On Sunday, Hopkins went a combined 4-for-7 with one run scored as Nevada split its final two outings with an 11-1 loss to Utah Valley and a 6-4 win over Utah. She finished the tournament with slugging and on-base percentages of .850 and .714, respectively. Defensively, Hopkins recorded 12 assists and five putouts without an error while splitting time between shortstop and second base.
Hitting from the five-spot in the lineup, Bauer batted .438 (7-for-16) with four home runs and nine RBI to help San Diego State to a 3-2 record at the Kajikawa Classic in Tempe, Ariz., last weekend. The San Diego, Calif., product also had four runs, one double and one walk, while owning a 1.250 slugging percentage and .471 on-base percentage. In a 5-2 win vs. Creighton on Thursday, Bauer was 2-for-3 with one home run, one RBI and one run scored. After going 0-for-3 in a 2-1 loss to Stephen F. Austin on Friday morning, she came back later in the day to go 2-for-4 with a three-run homer to lead SDSU past Northwestern, 7-5. On Saturday, Bauer went 2-for-4 with four RBI against Western Michigan, posting a two-run home run and a two-run double in the 5-1 victory. In a 2-1 loss to No. 13/14 Arizona, she went 1-for-2 with a solo home run and one walk. Bauer also pitched three innings and was perfect in one fielding chance.
Arbino went 3-1 in the circle with a 1.24 earned run average over 22.2 innings of work while helping San Diego State to a 3-2 record at the Kajikawa Classic. She saw action in all five contests, completing both games she started while providing relief in the other three. The Clovis, Calif., native struck out 20 batters against two walks for a 10-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio. Only five of the 25 hits she allowed were for extra bases and she limited the opposition to a .263 batting average. In the Aztecs' tournament opener against Creighton on Thursday, Arbino fanned a career-high 11 batters en route to the victory. Arbino yielded nine hits and two unearned runs without a walk over seven innings. On Friday, Arbino retired the only two batters she faced in a relief role in a loss to Stephen F. Austin. Later in the day, she earned the win against Northwestern after scattering five runs (three earned) on five hits and two walks over seven innings, while striking out three. Against Western Michigan on Saturday, Arbino picked up the win after allowing just three hits and no walks over six scoreless innings of relief, while striking out five. In the Aztecs' tournament finale vs. No. 13/14 Arizona, Arbino took the loss after allowing one run on four hits over two innings of relief. She struck out one without issuing a walk.
