Stats

LOS ANGELES - The San Diego State softball team fell to Long Beach State, 1-0, in the first game of the NCAA Regional at Easton Stadium on the campus of UCLA on Friday afternoon. With the loss, the Aztecs (32-14) will play the loser of UCLA and Missouri State at 5:05 p.m. Saturday, while the 49ers (31-20) will meet the winner of that game at 2:35 p.m. If San Diego State defeats the loser of UCLA and Missouri State, it will play again at 7:35 p.m.

Long Beach State got its only run in the sixth inning. Kourtnee Gervasi hit a one-out single to left field and advanced to second base off a sacrifice bunt by Brianna Goad. Tiffanie Wedell followed and beat out an infield single. However, the late throw by SDSU sophomore Chrissie Markham pulled freshman Monica Alnes off the first base bag, which allowed Gervasi to score the game-winning run.

Sophomore Christina Ross (16-9), the 2006 Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Year, pitched all seven innings for the Aztecs and tied her season high with nine strikeouts. She allowed only three hits and one unearned run, without walking a batter.

Senior Bree Boyer and freshman Erin Floros had SDSU's two hits in the game.

Michelle Turner (26-9) struck out four and gave up two hits for the 49ers over seven innings.
