Fort Collins, Colo. - The No. 4 seeded University of Utah (23-31) defeated No. 2 seeded San Diego State (37-23) by a score of 3-0 in the championship game of the Mountain West Conference Tournament Saturday afternoon at Ram Field behind the strength of sophomore pitcher and tournament MVP Brianna Gourdin. The Utes' championship is their second in three years, having also beaten San Diego State 8-1 to claim the 2002 tournament title.

Gourdin (18-7), a sophomore from Provo, Utah, pitched a complete game and allowed only one hit and one walk while striking out three batters on her way to a 3-0 tournament record and MVP honors. Gourdin carried a perfect game into the fourth inning of the championship game.

Utah jumped out to an early lead when sophomore Jackie Wong led off the game with a first-pitch single up the middle and advanced to third on a throwing error by Aztec's first baseman Lacey Craft on a bunt by the No. 2 hitter Bryanne Durrence. Wong, who finished the game 2-for-4 from the plate, scored one batter later on a sacrifice fly by senior Glennis Donnelly.

The Utes added two more runs in the top of the seventh inning to put the game out of reach. Sophomore Ivette Hernandez led off the inning with a single through the left side of the infield, and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Lynsey Wall. One batter later, Junior Kate Nygaard hit a two-run home run, her tenth of the season to put Utah on top 3-0.

San Diego State junior pitcher Cori Janelli picked up the loss and dropped to 11-9 on the season. Janelli pitched six innings allowing two runs on six hits and striking out one batter. Sophomore Celena Velasquez closed out the game for the Aztecs, pitching six innings and allowing one hit and one run.
