Box Score

SAN DIEGO - The BYU Cougars earned their second Mountain West Conference softball tournament title with a 2-0 win over second-seeded UNLV Saturday evening at SDSU Softball Stadium in San Diego. With the victory, the Cougars earned an automatic bid to the 2005 NCAA Softball Championships.

The Cougars opened up the scoring in the second inning to jump out to an early lead. Jennifer Whiteley's infield single got things started for BYU. Jodi Norton's double to left field plated Whiteley to put the Cougars up 1-0.

BYU added another run in the third as Krystle Chamberlain singled to third base, advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Debbie Dodds and came around to score on an error by Rebel left fielder Marissa Nichol's after Paige Paramore's single bounced past her to the fence.

Freshman pitcher Daniella Urincho gave up only three hits, while striking out four and walking two, on the way to the complete- game victory for the Cougars (44-12 overall) and the Mountain West Conference Tournament Most Valuable Player award. For the tournament she struck out nine batters and gave up one earned run and six hits in 14 innings of work.

Jacque Kerrigan lost her 14th game of the season for the Rebels, which dropped their record to 43-17 on the season. UNLV must now wait for Sunday evening to find out if they will receive an at-large berth to the NCAA Championship.
