Fort Collins, Colo. - San Diego State (37-22) advanced to the championship game with a semi-final win over New Mexico (30-35), by a score of 2-1. New Mexico advanced to face the Aztecs with a 1-0 victory over BYU earlier in the day and sent Iraina Ogas to the mound for her second start of the day. Ogas picked up the win in the 10-inning victory over the Cougars, pitching a shutout.
The Aztecs struck the first blow in the third inning with a leadoff homerun by catcher Danielle Touhey. The homerun was Touhey's third of the season. San Diego State's starting pitcher Cori Janelli cruised through the first five innings allowing just three hits and striking out two. Celena Velasquez relieved her in the sixth inning and with two outs Lobo's shortstop Ora Hensley tied the game with a solo homerun to left field, her second of the year.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Aztecs came out with two singles and took the lead on a sacrifice fly by Joann Figueroa, scoring Janna Kovensky. That was all San Diego State needed as the Mountain West pitcher of the year Celena Velasquez closed out the game in the seventh by pitching out of a jam. The Lobos loaded the bases with one out but Velasquez struck out Amy Ray and forced Ryanne Hodgins to ground out to end the game.
With the win Velasquez improved to 16-5 on the season and with the loss Ogas fell to 10-10. San Diego State will play the winner of the Colorado State-Utah game Saturday at 2 p.m.
