Fort Collins, Colo. - Utah (21-31) defeated UNLV (25-35) 1-0 in the Mountain West Softball Tournament behind a strong pitching performance by Brianna Gourdin. The sophomore allowed 4 hits in 7 innings while striking out 5 and walking none. Utah advances to a second-round match against top-seeded Colorado State.

The Utes got all the offense they'd need in the 6th when pinch-runner Amy Alvord scored from second on a single by Lynsey Wall off UNLV pitcher Jacqueline Kerrigan (19-18). UNLV centerfielder Lisa Sampson attempted a diving catch on Wall's line drive, only to have the ball pop out of her glove when she hit the ground.

The one run was plenty for Gourdin (16-7), whom carried a no-hitter into the 5th inning. She escaped jams in the 5th and 7th innings. In the 5th, UNLV's Joanna Jackson stole third with two outs. Gourdin responded by striking out Amber Campbell. In the 7th, UNLV's Morgan Bostwick led off the inning with a double, and was sacrificed to third with one out. Gourdin got Pauline Glenn to strike out swinging, and struck out Britney Hillyer looking to end the game.

Notes:

The shutout was the first for Utah since an April 27 8-0 win over Utah Valley State College

Ivette Hernandez's double in the 6th inning extended Utah's streak to 11 straight games with an extra base hit.
