Utah Tops New Mexico 1-0 In Opening Game Of 2005 MWC Softball Championship Lindsie Nielsen (10-13) picked up the win for Utah, tossing a complete-game three hit shutout.
May 12, 2005 SAN DIEGO, Calif. - In a quick game that lasted just an hour and nine minutes, fourth-seeded Utah topped No. 5 seed New Mexico, 1-0, in game one of the 2005 Mountain West Conference Softball Championship at the San Diego State Softball Stadium in San Diego, Calif. The Utes (21-27) advance to play Brigham Young (41-12) in game three of the day, set to begin at 4:30 p.m. The Lobos (15-33) fall into the losers' bracket and will play the loser of game four between SDSU and Colorado State in a contest scheduled for 7 p.m. The Utes scored the lone run of the game in the fourth, as Ivette Hernandez hit a one-out single, and was pinch run for by Sarah Lyman. Lyman scored when Bryanne Durrence hit an infield single and the Lobos threw a relay over the head of the first baseman and into the New Mexico dugout. Lindsie Nielsen (10-13) picked up the win for Utah, tossing a complete-game three hit shutout with no strikeouts and one walk. Katie Gregg (8-6) took the loss for the Lobos, also throwing a complete-game three-hitter, with no earned runs and a strikeout. The Utes got singles from Hernandez, Durrence and Lynsey Wall, while New Mexico picked up hits from Ryanne Hodgins, Christina Rios and Amy Ray.
