PROVO, Utah - No. 6 Colorado State eliminated No. 4 New Mexico 5-3 in the first game of Day 2 of the 2002 Mountain West Conference Tournament at Gail Miller Field, Friday. The Rams improve to 18-32 on the season and will face No. 2 Utah at 4:30 p.m. MDT. New Mexico finishes the season 18-29-1.

The Lobos got things started early as Cassie Chavez singled for the first at-bat of the day. Michelle Carter brought Chavez home to as the Lobos took an early 1-0 lead. Catcher Tiffany Chambers brought home Carter with single with the bases loaded. In all, the Lobos reeled off five hits to jump out to a 2-0 lead after one-half inning. Colorado State pitcher Megan Masser was able to get out of trouble with one out and bases loaded.

New Mexico threatened in the second inning again loading the bases with two hits, but was unable to score any runs. In the third inning, a costly error by a Ram shortstop allowed Molly McKinnon to get on base. Sophomore Sabrina Sandberg was able to bring McKinnon home with an RBI double to help the Lobos take a 3-0 lead.

The Rams responded with a rally of their own in the bottom of the third. After going hitless the first two innings, Colorado State reeled off four straight singles started by Katie Koch and ending with Amanda Kocis bringing home Koch and Steph Roberts. With two outs, Jennifer Mahoney hit a long fly ball that appeared to end the inning, but a New Mexico right fielder dropped the easy out and allowed Kerry Farrell and Kocis to score, as the Rams took their first lead of the game 4-3. Melanie Mahoney drove in sister Jennifer to end the decisive five-run inning.

Colorado State pitcher Megan Masser (5-13) picked up the win for the Rams, allowing only two earned runs. Maren Christensen picked up her second save of the season. Sophomore Hayley Punter (11-13) of New Mexico picked up the loss in two and one-third innings on the mound.
