SAN DIEGO - Brigham Young outlasted Utah in an offensive battle between the in-state softball rivals that saw a total of 23 hits between the two teams before BYU claimed a 7-4 victory in the sixth game of the 2003 Mountain West Conference softball tournament at SDSU Field on Friday. With the win, BYU improved to 35-15 overall, while the Utes were eliminated from the championship and finish the season with a 20-27 mark.
Utah tied the game at two runs a piece in the third inning when freshman Jackie Wong scored on a Niki Hayhurst bunt single before sophomore Texie Criddle came home on a Cougar error.
BYU added the go-ahead run in its half of the third frame when sophomore Milli Jones' sacrifice fly drove in junior Belinda Osborn to put the Cougars up, 3-2. Freshman Ianeta Lei's single to right field brought in two more runs in the inning to give BYU a 5-2 advantage going into the fourth.
The Utes threatened in the seventh when, with the bases loaded, Utah's game-winning run came to the plate in sophomore Bryanne Durrence. Cougar pitcher Brooke Boyce, who came in for the save replacing starter Niki Andersen (10-5) got Durrance to ground out to end the game and preserve the 7-4 win.
BYU now moves on to face top-seeded San Diego State Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
