PROVO, Utah - In the fourth and final game of Day 1 of the 2002 Mountain West Conference Tournament, San Diego State defeated New Mexico 4-1 at Gail Miller Field, Thursday. With the win, San Diego State improves to 40-21-1 making it the fastest team to reach 40 wins in MWC history. New Mexico drops to 18-28-1.
The Aztecs got things going in the bottom of the first inning as leadoff hitter Kellie Nordhagen smacked a triple off the right field fence. Centerfielder Janna Kovensky brought her home off a single up the middle to take a quick 1-0 lead.
Kelcy Murphy hit a solo home run in the second inning, her fourth of the season to help San Diego State take a 2-0 lead.
The Lobos made a late run in the top of the sixth inning with Michelle Carter bringing in Sabrina Sandberg off a sacrifice fly to bring the lead within one. The Aztecs sealed the win in the same inning off a two-run home run from Amber Grahlman, her second of the season. She hit her other home run in the season opener.
MWC Pitcher of the Year Bre DeSanta (19-8) of SDSU pitched six innings on the mound, giving up two hits while striking out four batters. Amy Dumas (5-10) picked up the loss for New Mexico.
No. 1 San Diego State will face the winner of the BYU/UNLV game tomorrow at 7 p.m. New Mexico will play No. 6 Colorado State at 11:30 a.m. Friday.
