PROVO, Utah - In the opening game of the MWC Tournament, UNLV defeated Colorado State 5-1 at Gail Miller Field, Thursday. The Rebels are now 30-32 while the Rams drop to 17-32. UNLV advanced to play No. 2 Utah in Game 3 starting at 4:30 p.m. MDT. Colorado State will play the loser of San Diego State vs. BYU/UNM of Game 5 tomorrow at 11:30 a.m.
In the bottom of the fourth, the Rebels broke the scoreless tie after racking up four runs on three hits. With the bases loaded and one out, Morgan Bostwick singled to left field to score Carrie Bayless for the game's first run. Melissa Inouye walked, scoring Geney Orri. Amber Campbell kept the rally going with a sacrifice fly to right field, scoring Pauline Glenn. The Rebels scored once more in the inning when Bridget Byrne singled in Morgan Bostwick.
Colorado State made a run in the bottom of the sixth, with Amanda Kocis brought in Steph Roberts with double to make it 4-1. The Rebels scored one of their own in the same inning to make it 5-1. Outfielder Lisa Moses brought in Bridget Byrne with an RBI single. Reliever Maren Christiensen from CSU struck out MWC Player of the Year Geney Orris to end the inning.
UNLV's Kacey Ellis improves to 7-3 with the win and Melanie Mahoney moves to 10-13 with Jackie Kerrigan picking up her fourth save of the season.
