SAN DIEGO - Second-seeded Colorado State erased a 3-1 deficit by scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth to defeat No. 3 seed BYU, 4-3, Thursday at SDSU Field. With the win, the Rams moved to 35-13 overall, while the Cougars fell to 34-16 in 2003, following the third game of the 2003 Mountain West Conference championships.
Colorado State scored all four of its runs with two outs beginning in the first inning when shortstop Brittany Burtner singled with the bases loaded to bring home third baseman Jennifer Mahoney.
Brigham Young immediately responded with the first of its two home runs in the game. Cougar Brooke Cadiente gave her team a 2-1 lead with one swing of the bat, sending one deep over the left field fence to also score All-American Oli Keohohou, who was intentionally walked to begin the top half of the second inning.
After two scoreless frames, BYU extended its advantage to 3-1 with a solo home run with two outs by catcher Lauren Watson.
In the bottom half of the fifth, Colorado State put together back-to-back RBI hits. First baseman Ricki Walker knocked in the first run of her team's at-bat with a double to centerfield, scoring lead-off hitter Steph Roberts. The next batter, designated player Melanie Laffoon, then followed with the game winner, blasting a two-run shot to right-center field, putting her team back into the lead, 4-3.
BYU had its best chance to at least tie the score in the bottom of the seventh with two outs and a runner on first and second, but Ram pitcher Megan Masser struck out Cynthia Fallowfield to end the game.
Masser allowed five hits and struck out six to earn the win and move to 18-5, while BYU starter Brooke Boyce pitched five innings and took the loss to drop to 11-5.
Colorado State, which is 1-0 in tournament play, will play its next game at 2 p.m. on Friday versus either UNLV, New Mexico or San Diego State. BYU, which defeated UNLV earlier in the day, will face Utah in an elimination game at 11:30 a.m.
