SAN DIEGO - The New Mexico Lobos defeated Utah, 5-0, in the first round of play at the Mountain West Conference Softball Tournament, held at San Diego State University.

With the win, the fifth-seeded Lobos improved to 25-35-1 and advanced to the second round where they will face top-seeded SDSU today at 4:30 p.m. The loss drops Utah to 20-26 on the year. The fourth-seeded Utes will play at 11:30 a.m. on Friday in an elimination game against an opponent to be determined late Thursday afternoon.

UNM jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the second inning when Ashley Shartzer and Sabrina Sandberg scored on a Ute error. The Lobos produced two more runs in the fifth inning as Kelly Glass scored on an Iraina Ogas sacrifice fly before Jamar Bynum crossed home plate on a passed ball. The Lobos added one more run in the seventh when Jennifer Sena, pinch running for Ogas, scored on an Ora Hensley triple to right field.

Amy Dumas (14-15) scattered four hits and struck out six in her complete-game effort for the Lobos. Utah's Heather Bowlin (5-11) picked up the loss, giving up eight hits and two earned runs.
