BYU Tops UNLV In MWC Tournament Opener
Cougars will face Colorado State at 2 p.m. today.

SAN DIEGO - The BYU Cougars broke a scoreless tie with a two-run fifth inning and then broke open the game with a four-run sixth in a 6-0 win over UNLV in first-round play of the Mountain West Conference Softball Tournament, being held at San Diego State University.
BYU's Oli Keohohou started the scoring with a solo homer in the fifth inning. The other two members of the third-seeded Cougars' outfield were also prominent in the 12-hit attack. Right fielder Lauren Watson had three hits to lead the team and left fielder Brooke Cadiente had one hit, drove in two runs and scored a pair of runs.
The Cougars scored all four runs in the sixth inning after two outs had been recorded to ice the game.
Brigham Young pitcher Niki Andersen allowed three hits and struck out four in the complete-game win as she improved to 9-5 on the season.
Brigham Young advances to face second-seeded Colorado State in a Thursday afternoon game (2 p.m. Pacific). Sixth-seed UNLV will play 9 a.m. Friday morning in an elimination game against an opponent to be determined late Thursday afternoon.
BYU improved to 35-15 with the win while UNLV fell to 20-38.
