BYU Edges Softball In Extra Innings
Davenport banged out three hits to lead the Utes.

PROVO, Utah - The University of Utah softball team (22-22-1 overall, 2-10 Mountain West) plated three unanswered runs late in the game only to see Brigham Young score the winning run in the eighth inning to edge the Utes, 4-3. BYU wins its 13th straight game as it improves to 33-16 and to 10-2 in loop action. The Cougars plated a run in the first inning, and its 1-0 lead held for five frames after it. In the top of the sixth, the Utes surged on a pair of RBI singles in that inning. It was Diana Phillips' single that made it 1-1 and Andrea Hoffman's single that upped it to 2-1. The hits scored Kristie Keller and Jacqueline Decker, respectively. Both teams plated a run in the seventh, Utah on Kara Foster's solo homer and BYU on Danielle Urincho's dinger. The home run exchange made it 3-3 and pushed the game into extra innings. It was BYU who arose to the occasion in the extra frame. Emi Snow hit a sacrifice fly to score Jennifer Whiteley. Karina Cannon got the start and tossed 7.1 innings. She gets the hard-luck loss in allowing six hits, four runs (three earned) and one walk. Cannon did whiff six Cougar batters. Utah did bang out 10 hits on the day. Hailey Davenport's 3-for-4 effort led the Utes this afternoon. But, eight of Utah's nine batters in the lineup had at least one hit in the loss. Christie Zinanti (15-6) nets the win for the home team. The Cougars had six hits with Jodi Norton's 2-for-4 outing tops on BYU.
The six-game road swing continues next weekend for the Utes. Utah will play a twinbill at Colorado State and pair of single games at New Mexico. |
