PROVO, Utah - The Colorado State softball team lost two games to BYU Friday night by scores of 12-3 and 6-2, respectively. The Rams record now stands at 27-12 (6-6 MWC).

In game one, the Rams jumped ahead by a score of 3-1 in the top of the fifth inning. Sophmore Steph Roberts led the way for Colorado State after hitting a homerun on the first pitch of the game, her second of the season. She ended the game going 1-for-2 from the plate with an RBI, a walk, and she scored twice. Senior Jen Mahoney finished the first game 1-for-3 with two RBI for the Rams.

In the bottom half of the fifth inning BYU designated player Cynthia Fallowfield hit a grand slam to put the Cougars on top for good. The grand slam, Fallowfield's first homerun of the season, was only the fourth given up by CSU pitchers this season and just the second allowed by Megan Masser. BYU went on to add seven more runs including another grand slam to end the game in the bottom of the six inning.

With the loss Masser dropped to 13-5 on the season, after giving up eight runs, walking six, and striking out two Cougars in 5.1 innings of work. Freshman Genevieve Kelly gave up the final grand slam to end the game in relief of Masser.

In the second game, Colorado State moved out ahead by a score of 1-0 in the top of the third inning before giving up five runs in the bottom half of that inning. BYU added another run in the bottom of the fourth and the Rams scored once more in the fifth.

Sophomore starting pitcher Melanie Mahoney gave up six runs on eight hits, walked three, and struck out three, picking up the loss. Freshman JayCee Wood pitched the final two innings holding the Cougars scoreless and allowing only one hit and one walk while fanning two BYU batters.

The Rams will finish up their Utah road swing Saturday with a double header against the Utah Utes. Games are slated to begin at 12:00 noon.
