PROVO, Utah - Playing in the final home doubleheader of the season, BYU split with New Mexico 7-1, 3-4. BYU improved to 31-13, 9-6 while the Lobos improved to 20-31-1, 3-9. BYU is now in second place in the Mountain West Conference.

On senior day, seniors Brooke Cadiente and Cynthia Fallowfield got things going early in the second inning with singles. Freshman Ashlyn Russell singled to left field to score Cadiente and junior Lindsey Gerhauser singled to score Fallowfield. Gerhauser was brought home off a single up the middle by sophomore Lauren Watson to give the Cougars a 3-0 lead.

Cadiente singled in third inning to score freshman Neta Lei, who reached on a walk, to increase the lead to four runs.

"I didn't realize that it would be the final time playing at home," Cadiente said. "I wanted to have some last fun playing at home."

The Lobos scored in the top of the fourth as Ora Hensley scored off a Stephanie Kennedy single.

Watson homered over the center field fence in the fourth inning to score Gerhauser, who reached on another single, to give the Cougars a 6-1 lead. The home run was the seventh on the season for Watson.

In the fifth inning, Gerhauser singled to left center to score sophomore Milli Jones, who pinch ran for Fallowfield for the final run of the game. Gerhauser finished the game 3-3 with two runs scored and two RBI.

Sophomore Niki Andersen (8-4) picked up the win allowing only one run through 4 2/3 innings. Freshman Brooke Boyce struck out two batters in two innings of relief.

In the second game, the Lobos scored two runs in the third inning as catcher Kim Korzak singled to scored freshman Ashley VanBoxmeer and BYU pitcher hit first baseman Elena Cranmer with the bases loaded to give up the second run.

All-American Oli Keohohou hit a three-run home run in the bottom of the fifth inning to give the Cougars a 3-2 lead. The home run is her 19th on the season and surpassed her total of last season of 18 and is two shy of her BYU record of 21 she set in 2001.

New Mexico responded to the home run well as they reeled off five singles in the sixth inning to score two runs and take a 4-2 lead. VanBoxmeer singled up the middle to score Sabrina Sandberg and pitcher Ashley Shartzer hit in the winning run, right fielder Jamar Bynum.

The Lobos thwarted any chance for a Cougar rally in the bottom of the seventh inning. Watson hit the first pitch of the inning hard to into second baseman Stephanie Kennedy's glove and her glove fell off, but the ball managed to stay in the glove. Kennedy then picked up ball out of glove and made the play at first. The hard hits up the middle where stopped by Shartzer's glove and the game ended 4-3.

Shartzer (2-7) picked up the win giving up five hits through seven innings. Senior Cynthia Fallowfield (7-4) picked up the loss in 5 1/3 innings on the mound.

"We ran out of gas in the second game and lost our focus and energy," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said.

BYU will finish the season next week as they take on Southern Utah in a doubleheader at 2 p.m. on Wednesday and play at Utah at noon on Saturday, May 3. The MWC Tournament runs May 8-11 in San Diego.
