Stats

PROVO, Utah -- The University of Utah softball team (22-21-1, 2-9 Mountain West) spotted Brigham Young a two-run lead in the first inning and couldn't rebound as the Cougars topped the Utes, 8-0, in a league tilt here this afternoon.

BYU wins its 11th straight game as it ups its mark to 32-16 overall and to 9-2 in conference games.

In the first frame, Emi Snow had a groundout RBI to shortstop and Andrea Ramirez had an RBI single to give BYU the quick 2-0 lead.

Christie Zinanti held the Utes to just three hits on the evening. Diana Phillips was the top hitter with a 2-for-3 effort while Hailey Davenport had the team's other hit, going 1-for-3 at the plate.

Karina Cannon got her first league start in the circle since April 5. She falls to 6-7 on the year, allowing nine hits, two walks and eight runs (four earned). Cannon did fan five Cougar batters.

BYU's lead doubled in the fourth, thanks in part to Danielle Urincho's solo home run, and then the Cougars hung a four-spot on the Utes in the sixth.

BYU pounded out nine hits and took advantage of three Utah errors. The Cougars' leading hitter was Jennifer Whiteley. She was 3-for-3 with two RBI. Zinanti (14-6) earned the victory.

The same two teams tangle here in Provo, Utah, tomorrow. First pitch at Gail Miller Field is at 2 p.m.
