CEDAR CITY, Utah - BYU improved to 25-16 on the year with a double-header sweep over Southern Utah (18-24) Tuesday. The Cougars beat the Thunderbirds 11-2 and 4-0.

"The most impressive thing today was our pitching again," BYU head coach Gordon Eakin said. "Our pitching was just incredible, and our bats just came alive in the first game and again in the sixth and seventh innings of the last game."

BYU took a 6-0 lead into the seventh inning of the first game where the team exploded for five more runs in the blowout victory. Freshman Angeline Quiocho drew a lead-off walk in the inning, and Monica Gonzales followed with a bunt. Senior Cortney Nix-Clark doubled to left field scoring Quiocho. A Jennifer Whiteley single drove in Gonzales, leaving Nix-Clark and Whiteley on the corners. With the runners still on base, Junior Emi Snow sent her 10th home run of the season into left field.

Mountain West Conference Pitcher of the Week Christie Zinanti got her ninth win of the season. Zinanti struck out four and allowed just two earned runs.

Three Cougars went deep in the second game of the double-header, as Christina Gwyn pitched six shutout innings on the way to recording her 12th win.

In the sixth inning, senior Jodi Norton hit her fifth home run in her last three games, a two-run shot to left field. Norton's 15th home run of the season matches her previous career-high of 15 home runs in 2006.

Tracee Hoch and Quiocho knocked back-to-back homers to center field in the seventh to cap the Cougars' day.

Gwyn struck out eight and gave up only three hits.

BYU comes back home for a double-header against Colorado State on The Mtn. on Thursday. Games begin at 5 p.m. (MST) and 7 p.m.
