FORT COLLINS, Colo. - The Colorado State (28-11, 4-2 MWC) softball team swept conference-foe BYU (23-14, 3-5 MWC) on Thursday afternoon at Ram Field to jump into second place in the Mountain West. The Rams held off the Cougars by a 4-2 margin in game one, followed by a game-two shutout performance from sophomore pitcher Genevieve Kelly to lead the Rams to the 2-0 victory.

In game one, the Rams jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning, when leadoff hitter Stephanie Roberts reached on a walk and scored on a single to left field by senior Ricki Walker. BYU took the lead, scoring two runs in the top of the fourth inning off of a two-RBI double by senior second baseman Kate Walker.

The Rams answered with one run in the bottom of the fifth inning to knot the game at two. Sophomore right fielder Jennifer Gardner ripped a single to left center, scoring freshman pitcher Jessica Strickland.

The Rams put the game out of reach with back-to-back home runs with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning, from junior catcher Kerry Farrell, her fourth of the season, followed by a solo shot by freshman centerfielder Brittany Huerta. Huerta's home run was her 11th of the season, tying the record for single-season home runs in Colorado State history with Holly Schmillen (2000) and Sarah Fredstrom (1998).

Strickland, who leads the team with nine victories on the season, struck out one batter and allowed two BYU runs in five iinnings of work. Senior Megan Masser picked up the win in relief of Strickland, improving her record to 6-3.

In game two, the Rams recorded their sixth shutout of the season behind the right arm of Kelly. Kelly struck out eight batters and only allowed three hits to earn her second shutout of the season.

Sophomore Rachelle Padeway knocked in the Rams' first run with a single to centerfield, scoring Strickland from second base and putting the Rams on top 1-0. The Rams added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth inning when Walker scored on a single to left field by Strickland.
