BYU Swept By OSU, Akron
March 25, 2006 CORVALLIS, Ore. - For the second consecutive season Oregon proved to be a difficult place to play as BYU drops its final two games of its Oregon trip, 1-0, to Akron and 2-1, to No. 8 Oregon State. The Cougars (18-10) struggled swinging the bats in Oregon, losing four of five. BYU posted a 1-5 record last season when it took a trip to Oregon. Brooke Boyce-Humbert cruised from the pitcher's circle in the first game. She pitched a perfect game through 5 2/3 innings. Unfortunately for the Cougars, the bats were silent. BYU left runners on base in the first three innings and were only able to get one runner on base after the third frame. With two outs in the bottom of the seventh, Akron came up with back-to-back hits, the second being a RBI game-winning double. The losses to the Zips and Beavers were the second and third consecutive game the Cougars fell on a walk-off hit in the bottom of the last inning. A 22-minute rain delay in the second inning interrupted the BYU and Oregon State game early on as the Cougars scored first against the Beavers. Tracee Hoch doubled to lead off the third inning and was followed three batters later by an RBI single by Ianeta Le`i. BYU was held to the one run as Summer Tobias did a nice job keeping the dangerous Oregon State bats under control for 5 1/3 innings. With one out in the sixth the Beavers tied the game on a solo home run. In the bottom of the eighth, OSU manufactured its game-winning run. The Cougars begin Mountain West Conference play next week when they
welcome UNLV to Gail Miller Field for their home opener.
