Russell's Slam Salvages Split With No. 22 DePaul

Cougars take game two, 7-5.

EUGENE, Ore. - Ashlyn Russell came up clutch for BYU, nailing a grand slam in the seventh inning of the second game of a double header against No. 22 DePaul as the Cougars earned a split.

BYU (18-7) lost game one, 4-2, before winning in come-from-behind fashion, 7-5, in the second game.

In the first game, the Cougars jumped out to an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second when Cortney Nix laced a RBI single to score Stephanie Platt. The one run held until the top of the sixth when the Blue Demons exploded for six hits. The big blow came with bases loaded on a bases-clearing double.

The Cougars had their chances late in the game. BYU's Jodi Norton connected with a RBI double in the bottom of the sixth to cut the lead to 4-2. In the bottom of the seventh, the Cougars loaded the bases but were unable to get any runs and the score stuck.

In game two BYU out hit DePaul 12-4. The Blue Demons struck first, taking a 1-0 lead on an unearned run. The Cougars tied the score on a RBI double by Andrea Ramirez in the third. Ramirez added another run-scoring double in the fifth and Norton came up with a RBI single in the sixth to tie the game at 3-3.

In the bottom of the six, DePaul cashed in two unearned runs to retake a 5-3 lead. In the top of the seventh the Cougars started to roll. BYU opened the inning with a double and two singles to load the bases with nobody out. Russell promptly cleared the bases with one swing of the bat on the Cougars' first grand slam of the season.

BYU takes on host-school Oregon in a Friday twinbill. Start times are 3 and 5 p.m. (MST)
