Ross Pitches SDSU Past Nevada, 2-1
Ross strikes out six for Aztecs

FULLERTON, Calif. - Junior pitcher Christina Ross (Santa Clarita, Calif.) struck out six batters and the San Diego State softball team scored both of its runs on Nevada errors in a Aztec 2-1 victory in the final day of the Worth Invitational in Fullerton, Calif., on Sunday. San Diego State improved to 11-8 with the win, while the Wolfpack fell to 6-14. Ross (6-3) scattered eight hits, all singles, over seven innings to pick up the victory. Her six strikeouts came without a walk. SDSU got on the scoreboard in the top of the first thanks to some small ball and a Nevada error. Junior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.) led off with an infield slap single and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by sophomore Dani Sidoti (Tucson, Ariz.). Sophomore Monica Alnes (Rancho Palos Verdes, Calif.) followed with a bloop double to right field and Wells moved to third. Junior Taryin Casillas (San Diego/Grossmont HS) hit a chopper to Wildcat third baseman Kelsey Starr and Wells scored when Starr's throw sailed over the catcher's head. Freshman Stefanie Quichocho-Rosario (San Diego/Morse HS) made it 2-0 Aztecs in the fourth when she stole third base and scored on an errant throw by Nevada catcher Katie Stith. SDSU had three hits in the inning - a leadoff double by junior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.), who was replaced by Quichocho-Rosario at second, and singles by freshmen Brittany Knudsen (San Diego/Escondido HS) and Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) - and stole two bases (Knudsen and Marquez) but were only able to score the one run.
Nevada scored its run in the fifth on three two-out bloop singles. With the Wolfpack still threatening with a runner on first and third, Ross struck out Brittany Puzey to end the inning. San Diego State will travel across the city to meet San Diego at 6 p.m. Wednesday. |
