Rams Split on Day Two of Desert Classic CSU defeats No. 11 Cal, Falls to Central Florida.
Feb. 17, 2007 The Colorado Softball team dropped a close decision to Central Florida on Saturday afternoon at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic in Las Vegas, Nev. after picking up a big win over No. 11-ranked Cal earlier in the day. The Rams and Golden Knights battled to a scoreless tie through three innings, before UCF struck the first and only blow of the contest when junior pitcher Allison Kime hit a solo home run. The Rams were held to just two hits in the contest, and were unable to overcome the Kime home run. Senior Jessica Strickland pitched the complete game for the Rams, allowing one run nine hits and striking out two batters. Kime struck out six Rams in the game. "Jess (Strickland) threw a very good game, but we were unable to come up with a timely hit," added head coach Mary Yori." Earlier in the day, the Rams beat No. 11 Cal, 2-0, the second season in a row that the Rams' defeated a top-25 opponent at the Desert Classic, after a 6-1 decision over No. 18 Oregon in last season. The game was scoreless until the top of the sixth inning when senior Strickland opened with a double and fellow senior Brittany Huerta walked. Freshman Robyn Mask singled to load the bases before freshman Sarah Sullivan hit a two-run single to score the only runs of the game and give the Rams a 2-0 victory. Strickland was 1-for-2 from the plate with one run scored. Sophomore Kim Klabough pitched the complete game for the Rams, allowing no runs and striking out four batters. With the win, Klabough improves to 2-2 on the season.
"Kim (Klabough) really set the tone of the game," added head coach Mary Yori. "She was outstanding and gave us a big win. It was great to get back on track with a win against a quality opponent." The Rams conclude play at the Louisville Slugger Desert Classic tomorrow when they take on UC Davis at 12:30 p.m. MT. |
