Final Stats

CATHEDRAL CITY, Calif. - The San Diego State softball team had a season-high 11 hits and earned its third shutout of the weekend in a 6-0 victory over Portland State Sunday at the Cathedral City Kickoff in Cathedral City, Calif. With the win, the Aztecs improved to 4-1, while the Vikings dropped to 2-3.

Brittany Knudsen (San Diego, Calif./Escondido HS) broke open a scoreless game in the bottom of the third inning when she drilled a two-out, 1-2 pitch over the right field fence. It was the sophomore's first homer of the season and fifth of her career.

SDSU tacked on three more runs in the fourth. Senior Megan McDonald (Glendale, Ariz.) got the inning going when she laced a one-out single to right field. Sophomore Stefanie Quichocho-Rosario (San Diego, Calif./Morse HS) replaced McDonald at first and then stole second on the very next pitch. Following a walk to freshman Samantha Beasley (San Diego, Calif./Steele Canyon HS), classmate Jessica Camello (Temecula, Calif.) beat out an infield single to load the bases. Sophomore Lindsey Marquez (Tustin, Calif.) scored Quichocho-Rosario with a groundout and junior transfer Tony McCorkle (Santa Ana Heights, Calif.) followed with a two-run single to left, giving San Diego State a 4-0 lead.

The Aztecs used some small ball in the sixth to add two more runs to their tally. SDSU got three infield singles in the inning, which culminated in a two-run hit by senior Tamani Wells (Concord, Calif.).

Camello went a perfect 3-for-3 with two runs scored to lead the San Diego State offense, while Wells added two hits, including a double. Six others had one hit apiece.

Beasley (1-0) became the second Aztec freshman over the weekend to earn a complete game shutout in her collegiate pitching debut. Beasley, the younger sister of former four-time letterwinner Amanda Beasley, allowed four hits, while striking out four over seven innings. On Friday night, Brooke Petty (San Diego, Calif./Vista HS) tossed a three-hit shutout in SDSU's 7-0 victory over California.

San Diego State will play host to the prestigious Campbell-Cartier Classic this weekend, beginning with a game against UC Santa Barbara at 7 p.m. Thursday.
