Final Stats

The Colorado State softball team dropped a 3-2 decision to the New Mexico State Aggies Thursday in Las Cruces, N.M. With the loss, the Rams fall to 0-1 to start the season.

New Mexico State took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second off of a double by freshman Amanda Pulley. The Rams rebounded to tie the game at one in the top of the third. Junior Lauren Cusick doubled to right center before freshman Kayla Kreutzman and senior Jessica Strickland walked to load the bases. Cusick then scored on a two-out single by freshman Ashley Munoz.

Another pair of Rams' freshmen combined to give Colorado State the lead in the sixth inning. Sarah Sullivan scored on a double by Rebecca Penland to put the Rams up 2-1.

However, Colorado State was not able to hold the lead. New Mexico State tied the game when Pulley led off the final inning with a double off of CSU's Kim Klabough. Following a walk by Kristi Hanan, Rishelle Gastelum singled to score the pinch runner, Kayla Luttmers. Cayte Billman, a transfer from Nebraska-Omaha, entered the game in relief of Klabough, and threw two consecutive wild pitches to allow the go-ahead run to advance to third base. Kristi Randall singled to score Hanan and give New Mexico State the victory.

Munoz led the Rams with a 3-for-3 day with one RBI and one walk. Cusick finished 1-for-2 with one RBI and a run scored. Klabough pitched 6.1 innings, allowing three runs and striking out two batters. Billman faced one batter and allowed the game-winning hit.

Colorado State will begin play tomorrow in the Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces Invitational in Las Cruces, N.M. They face Sam Houston State at 10:30 a.m., followed by a 12:30 p.m. matchup with North Texas.
