LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The second day of the Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces Classic started with more offense from the Colorado State softball team (3-2) as it defeated Cleveland State 12-11, but was unable to take the same momentum into the second game as the Rams were held scoreless by host New Mexico State, losing 8-0 in five innings.

After giving up four runs in the top of the first, Colorado State answered with five runs in the bottom half of the inning to take a 5-4 lead. With one run already across the plate, junior Ashley Munoz added another RBI to her tournament total when she singled down the left field line to plate freshman Jenna Krogh, who bunted for a single earlier in the inning. Junior Kayla Kreutzman gave the Rams two more RBI on her double to center field and scored one of her three runs in the game when freshman Lyssa Roberts singled up the middle.

The Rams allowed the Vikings to score 10 runs in the first three innings to take a 10-5 lead, but Colorado State tightened the Cleveland State lead in the third to 10-8. The Rams tied it up in the bottom of the fourth on a one-out, pinch-hit double by senior Shannon Causgrove to plate Kreutzman and Munoz. Colorado State took the lead on a sacrifice fly by junior Robyn Mask to score junior Sarah Sullivan and freshman Ashley MacQueen.

Freshman Dani Chaplin started in the circle for the Rams, recording just one out before being relieved by fellow freshman Kelli Eubanks who threw 1.2 innings. She was relieved by junior Rebecca Penland who finished the final five innings in the circle. Penland recorded four strikeouts while only allowing one earned run.

Colorado State was held to three hits in the second game, with MacQueen and freshman Christine Thomsen recording singles and Munoz recording a double.

Senior Kim Klabough (0-1) started for the Rams in the circle, throwing 3.2 innings. She was relieved by Penland in the fourth who recorded the last out for Colorado State.

The Rams conclude tournament play Sunday when they face Ohio State at 9 a.m. MST.
