UNM Softball Falls to Syracuse, 12-6 Orange rally late to defeat New Mexico at Lobo Field

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. - Lobo senior Samantha Hughes went 2-for-2 but her efforts were not enough as the University of New Mexico fell 12-6 to Syracuse University Saturday afternoon at Lobo Field. UNM (1-1) scored early in the bottom of the first inning with a double by Katie Gilmore to score two runners on third and second. A fielder's choice scored the third run for the Lobos to go ahead 3-0. Syracuse (1-1) tied the game in the top of the third inning with a runner on second, Hallie Gibbs hit a single to center field to score the run. The Lobos put two runs together in the bottom of the sixth inning to attempt a comeback, but fell short. Jessica Lujan-Dresslar's double scored the first run of the inning. Lujan-Dresslar scored later on a passed ball by Amy Kelley to end the inning behind 7-5. Syracuse scored four runs in the seventh inning to seal the win for the Orange. Jenna Caira (1-0) received the win for Syracuse with six strikeouts, while Analise Rubalcava (0-1) was handed the loss. The Lobos host game the final game of the home stand against Syracuse on Sunday, Feb. 8 at 1:00 p.m. MT at Lobo Field.
