LAS CRUCES, N.M. – Colorado State bounced back from a loss on Thursday night and defeated both Missouri-Kansas City and Ohio on Day 1 of the Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces Classic. The Rams (2-1) beat the Kangaroos 6-5, and the Bobcats 13-11, respectively.

Several Colorado State players contributed to the victories with eight different players recording a hit in the first game. Sophomore Caitlan Stem finished 2-for-4 from the leadoff spot with a double, two RBI and one run. She was followed by freshman Jenna Krogh( 2-for-4 with two runs) and freshman Christine Thomsen, who finished 1-for-3 with two RBI and a run.

Senior Kim Klabough picked up her first win of the season, throwing 6.1 innings while striking out two Kangaroo batters. Junior Rebecca Penland relieved Klabough and retired the final two batters to secure the Rams’ first victory of the season.

The offensive power continued in the second game, with Colorado State recording 13 runs on 15 hits. Junior Ashley Munoz led the team at the plate with a six-RBI performance. Three of her RBI came in the fourth inning when she doubled to center field to plate Thomsen, Krogh and Stem, who all singled earlier in the inning. The other three RBI were recorded when she homered in the sixth inning.

Freshman Kelli Eubanks (1-1) recorded her first win in the circle, pitching 3.2 innings while striking out two Bobcat batters. Penland relieved Eubanks and pitched 3.1 innings to record the Rams’ second victory this season.


 

 

The Rams continue tournament play Saturday when they face Cleveland State at 9 a.m. MST, followed by a rematch of Thursday’s game against New Mexico State at 2 p.m. MST. Colorado State concludes tournament play Sunday at 9 a.m. MST against Ohio State.
