LAS CRUCES, N.M. – The Colorado State softball team (0-1) lost its first game of the season Thursday to the New Mexico State Aggies, 9-1, in five innings.

In the fifth inning, junior Rebecca Penland gave the Rams their only run of the game when she drove in freshman Christine Thomsen, who doubled to center field.

Penland started in the circle for Colorado State, pitching 1.2 innings. She allowed five runs on four hits while striking out two. Freshman Kelli Eubanks relieved Penland in the second inning and pitched the final 1.2 innings, striking out one Aggie batter.

The Rams return to the field Friday for the Hotel Encanto de Las Cruces Classic when they face Missouri-Kansas City at 9 a.m., and Ohio at 4:30 p.m.
