Nov. 24, 1999
Colorado Springs, Colo. – The National Soccer Coaches Association of American (NSCAA) announced its 1999 West Region Team this past weekend and the Mountain West Conference had six women soccer players honored. BYU led the MWC with three NSCAA West Region selections, followed by Utah with two and San Diego State with one. Named to the first team were BYU senior forward Maren Hendershot and junior defender Staci Reynolds. Hendershot was the conference player of the year and MWC Tournament MVP in 1999. She finished the season ranked second in the league in scoring with 15 goals and 38 total points. This is the second year in a row Hendershot has been named to the west region first team. Reynolds was a first team all-conference selection and was a catalyst in the Cougar defense that ranked first in the MWC in both goals allowed (0.80 per game) and shutouts (0.48 per game). BYU senior midfielder Sara Reading, Utah senior forward Staci Burt and San Diego State senior forward Lori LaCoursiere were all honored as second team NSCAA West Region selections. Reading led the conference in goals (17) and points (39) this season and was a first team All-MWC selection. Burt captured all-conference first team honors this season and was ranked in the top ten in every MWC offensive category. LaCoursiere became the San Diego State all-time assist leader this season (46) and led the league in that category with a total of 14 on the year. She also garnered first team all-conference honors and was an NSCAA West Region second team selection in 1998. Freshman goalkeeper Courtney Hills of Utah was the lone NSCAA West Region third team representative for the MWC. In just her first year of collegiate soccer, Hills captured first team all-conference honors and ranked in the top five in the league in saves (T-2nd, 114), saves per game (5th, 5.70), shutouts (2nd, 0.35) and shutouts per game (3rd, 0.35).
