BYU, Utah Eye NCAA Soccer Showdown The Deseret News Feature Story
Nov. 14, 2002
By Mike Sorensen PROVO, Utah - For the BYU women's soccer team, it's business as usual. For the Utah soccer team, it's a brand-new experience. The Cougars and Utes meet tonight in a first-round NCAA game at 7 p.m. at BYU's South Field. While the Cougars will be playing in their sixth straight NCAA tournament, the Utes will be making their first-ever NCAA appearance. Not only have the Cougars played in five straight NCAA meets, they've won their first-round game the past four years. They knew they'd be in the tournament when the pairings were announced Monday because they won the Mountain West Conference tournament last week. The Utes, on the other hand, were thrilled to find out while watching ESPN that they earned a berth in the NCAA tournament as an at-large team after compiling a 12-3-3 record this year. To be playing BYU is a bonus, because the Utes were disappointed in their 2-1 loss to the Cougars two weeks ago in Salt Lake. They also missed a chance at a rematch in the Mountain West Conference tournament last week when they lost to New Mexico in the semifinals.
