Utah To Open Against BYU The Deseret News Feature Story
Nov. 12, 2002
By Mike Sorensen SALT LAKE CITY - As far as the players and coaches on the Utah women's soccer team were concerned, they couldn't have received better news than they got at precisely 2:47 Monday afternoon. Not only did they receive official word of their hoped-for NCAA berth as they sat together watching a large-screen TV in the Utah Room of the Burbidge Center, they also were thrilled to see their first-round opponent would be BYU. The Utes (12-3-3) and Cougars (16-5) will meet Thursday at 7 p.m. at South Field in Provo. The winner will play the winner of Portland-Idaho State Saturday afternoon for the right to move on to the Sweet 16. "I'm elated, especially for the girls," said first-year coach Rich Manning. "The older girls have been trying so hard for so long, I'm just happy for them." "It's a great feeling when you've worked so hard all season," said Utah senior Shauna Gurr-Bingham, the Utes' leading scorer. "I've been here five years, and it's good to know you've actually advanced."
