COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU will be the lone Mountain West Conference representative in the 2001 NCAA Women's College Cup. The Cougars received the automatic bid after defeating UNLV in the conference championship last week in Las Vegas, Nev.

BYU will travel to Lincoln, Neb., to face Kansas (13-6) in the first round of the tournament Wed., Nov. 15 at 4:30 p.m. BYU compiled a 13-6-1 overall record this season and posted a 5-1 league mark to win the MWC regular-season title. The winner of the BYU/Kansas match will play the winner of host Nebraska vs. Boston College Saturday, Nov. 17 at 1 p.m.

The Cougars will be making their fifth overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament and hold a 4-4 all-time record in postseason play. BYU has made it to the "Sweet 16" twice, with its last appearance coming last year when it fell to Santa Clara, 2-1, in overtime. This is the first time in three years the Cougars have not hosted a first round match.

The 64-team NCAA Tournament begins with first-round matches being played Thursday and Friday, November 15-16, at campus sites. Second-round matches will be played either November 17 or 18, at the same campus locations. Third-round games will be played on campus sites November 23, 24 or 25, as will quarterfinal matches on November 30, December 1 or 2. The 20th annual NCAA Division I Women's College Cup will be played December 7 and 9 at Gerald J. Ford Stadium on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas.

The No. 1 seed in the 2001 Women's College Cup is two-time defending national champion North Carolina. The Big East Conference led all conferences with eight teams selected to the tournament. Seven teams will represent the ACC and five each were named from the Pacific-10 Conference, the Southeastern Conference, and the West Coast Conference.

Twenty-eight conferences were granted automatic bids for the 2001 championship. The remaining 36 teams were selected at-large.
