PROVO, Utah (Nov. 10, 1999) — The BYU women’s soccer team advanced to the second round of the NCAA soccer tournament Wednesday, shutting out California, 2-0, in Provo. The teams battled through a scoreless half before the game turned into the Kim Lowe show. Lowe, a junior forward, netted two unassisted goals within less than seven minutes of one another to give the Cougars the margin they needed to record the win.

BYU (21-3) outshot California (13-7-1) 21-5 in the contest, allowing California to get just one shot off in the first half. California goalie Maite Zabala grabbed 11 saves, while Cougar goalie Jennifer Waldron had two for BYU.

“I thought we played an outstanding game all-around,” BYU head coach Jennifer Waldron said. “California’s a very good team, very quick and physical. The first half was fairly even, and the girls did a nice job of turning it up the second half and played very well.”

California head coach Kevin Boyd agreed the second half made the difference.

“I thought they turned it up a notch at halftime, and we didn’t,” he said. “We didn’t play as active as they did.”

BYU will now head to California to face Santa Clara, ranked number one in the nation. Game time is at 1 p.m. Pacific time.
