NCAA WOMEN’S COLLEGE CUP PREVIEW: The No. 1 seed in the 1999 Women’s College Cup is Santa Clara. The No. 2 seed is North Carolina, followed by defending national champion No. 3 Florida, No. 4 Kentucky, No. 5 Notre Dame, No. 6 Southern California, No. 7 Clemson and No. 8 Connecticut. The ACC had the most selections in this year’s tournament with six. The BIG 12, Ivy League and Pac-10 came in second with four each. Twenty-four teams had automatic qualification into the tournament, while both Mountain West Conference teams were among at-large selections. You can find the NCAA Women’s College Cup bracket, ticket prices and other information on-line at www.ncaachampionships.com. BYU AND SDSU IN THE WOMEN’S CUP: BYU will host California (13-6-1) in the first round of the tournament on Wed., Nov. 10 in Provo, Utah. This will be the second straight year that BYU has hosted a first round match. The Cougars compiled a 20-3 overall record this season and posted a 5-1 conference mark to share a piece of the MWC regular-season title with SDSU and Utah. The Cougars are coming off the Mountain West Conference Championship crown, which they won Sat., Nov. 6, with a 2-1 overtime victory over San Diego State. BYU will be making its third overall appearance in the NCAA Tournament this year and holds a 2-2 all-time record in postseason play. In their first trip in 1997, the Cougars fell 1-0 at Santa Clara. In 1998, BYU cruised by Stanford, 6-1, at home in the first round and shutout UCLA 2-0 in Los Angeles in the second round. In the Round of 16, the Cougars fell for the second consecutive year to Santa Clara, 3-0. If BYU wins its first round match in 1999, it will once again travel to Santa Clara to face the Broncos in the second round. San Diego State posted a 15-6 overall record this season and was an MWC regular season co-champion with a 5-1 conference record. The Aztecs advanced to the title match of the conference championship before falling to BYU 2-1 in overtime. SDSU will travel across town for its NCAA first round match against the University of San Diego (15-4) on Wednesday, Nov. 10. The Aztecs and Toreros usually meet annually, but did not face each other in 1999. In their last meeting on Oct. 7, 1998, SDSU defeated USD 4-2. The Aztecs are making their second overall NCAA appearance. In 1998, San Diego State received a first round bye and defeated Southern California, 2-1, in three overtimes in San Diego. The Aztecs traveled to Portland in the Round of 16, but fell 5-0. If SDSU can make it past USD in the first round, it will travel up the coast for a second round match against UCLA. NATIONAL RANKINGS: BYU remained No. 23 in the latest NSCAA poll despite going 3-0 this past week and winning the MWC championship. The Cougars are 20-3 overall and have a better record than 13 of the teams rated above them. BYU moved up three spots to No. 12 in this week’s Soccer Buzz poll. Last week the Cougars were ranked 15th. San Diego State dropped four slots in the latest Soccer Buzz poll from No. 19 to No. 23 after going 1-1 last week. REGIONAL RANKINGS: BYU and San Diego State both appear in the Soccer Buzz West Regional Rankings this week. The Cougars moved up for the second week in a row and now find themselves in the No. 3 position. The Aztecs maintained their No. 7 ranking for the third week in a row. NATIONAL STATISTICS: BYU is No. 7 in the latest NCAA national statistics rankings in scoring offense. The Cougars have scored 64 goals for a 3.37 goals per game average. The 64 goals in 19 matches is the third-highest goal total in the country through Oct. 24. The Cougars are also tied for 17th nationally in team defense. BYU has allowed 14 goals in its 19 contests for a 0.76 goals allowed average. Individually, Wyoming junior goalkeeper Amanda Vandervort remains the lone MWC athlete to be ranked as she is No. 16 in the country in saves per game, averaging 8.31. In 16 matches, Vandervort made 133 total saves. BYU NOTCHES SIXTH STRAIGHT VICTORY: BYU extended it current win streak to six matches this past week, going 3-0 at the Mountain West Conference Championship. The Cougars defeated Wyoming (1-0), Utah (4-3) and San Diego State (2-1 ot) on its way to the conference title. The current six-match win streak ties the season-high set earlier this year from August 27-September 13. The longest win streak during one season at BYU was set in 1996 when it won 14 straight. The Cougars’ all-time consecutive wins record is 19 (Oct. 21, 1996-Oct. 2, 1999). AZTECS WIN STREAK COMES TO AN END: San Diego State extended its win streak to a season-high six matches after defeating the Air Force Academy, 3-1, in the semifinals of last week’s Mountain West Conference Women’s Soccer Championship. In Saturday’s final against BYU, the Aztecs streak came to an end with a 2-1 overtime loss. The six wins in a row were the most since 1998 when SDSU won 12 consecutive matches from Sept. 13-Oct. 24. UTAH SETS SINGLE-SEASON WIN MARK: The Utes finished the 1999 season with a 13-7 overall record and a 5-1 league record en route to the MWC regular season co-championship. The five conference victories set a new program high and helped Utah capture its first league title. The Utes also set a school record for wins with 13. The previous high was 12 set in both 1996 and 1998. Utah had a strong showing in the conference tournament, winning its first-ever quarterfinal match 4-2 over New Mexico. In the semifinal match, BYU took a 3-0 lead into the half. Utah competed a player down for well over 55 minutes and pulled within one goal twice, but eventually fell 4-3. The only other postseason appearance for Utah came in 1995 when they lost a quarterfinal match to Fresno State (2-1), before winning the consolation game against Wyoming (1-0). FALCONS REACH NEW HEIGHTS: The Air Force Academy completed the 1999 season with an 11-10 overall record and 3-3 mark in conference play. This is the first time since the Falcons joined the Division I ranks in 1996 that they have recorded a winning season. The 11 victories ranks as the second-highest win total in school history (14 in 1995). The three league wins is also tied for the most conference victories since the move in 1996. The Air Force Academy also participated in its first postseason conference tournament in the program’s eight-year history this season. The Falcons were the No. 4 seed and defeated the fifth-seeded UNLV Rebels, 5-2, in the quarterfinals. In the semifinal match against No. 1 seed San Diego State, Air Force played tough but eventually fell 3-1. COWGIRLS MAKE STRIDES IN ‘99: Despite the 4-14-1 overall record in 1999, Wyoming’s women’s soccer program made significant strides this season. A number of firsts were recorded this year, including the first win against a Mountain West Conference team with a 1-0 win at New Mexico. The win broke a 12-match losing streak to MWC teams and a 45-match road losing streak. The Cowgirls ended their regular season with a 2-1 win at Eastern Washington and picked up their first nonconference road victory in the program’s history. In the MWC Championship, Wyoming was the No. 7 seed and nearly pulled off the biggest upset in school history when it fell to No. 2 seed and eventual champion BYU, 1-0, in the quarterfinals. LOBOS IMPROVE: New Mexico completed the 1999 season with a 6-13-1 overall record and a 1-5 conference mark. The six wins were a two game improvement from 1998. The three shutouts recorded this season were also the highest mark since 1997. The Lobos went 4-1-1 in tournament play during the regular season. New Mexico defeated Creighton (1-0), Denver (4-1), Mississippi (2-0) and Georgia State 93-0). The loss and tie came to Fairfield (2-1) and Texas Tech (1-1). The Lobos played well in the quarterfinals of the conference championship, but were outlasted by Utah, 4-2. UNLV BUILDING FOR FUTURE: The Rebels finished their second year as a collegiate women’s soccer program with a 7-11-1 overall record and went 1-5 in conference play. UNLV started its home schedule 4-0, but dropped five of the last six. The Rebels entered the MWC Championship as the No. 5 seed, but dropped the quarterfinal game, 5-2, to Air Force. COUGARS PERFECT AT HOME: BYU went 11-0 at South Field in 1999. The Cougars were the only team in the conference to produce a perfect home record. In those 11 matches, BYU recorded nine shutouts, scored 42 goals, an average of 3.82 goals per game, and allowed just two goals. The last time BYU lost at home was on Nov. 7, 1998, to San Diego State (2-1 in ot) in the title game of the Western Athletic Conference Championship. The last regular season defeat on South Field was also to the Aztecs (1-0 on Oct. 24, 1998). MWC SHUTOUTS: All eight conference teams recorded at least two shutouts in 1999. BYU leads the league with 11 shutouts, followed by San Diego State (8), Utah (7), Air Force (5), New Mexico (3), UNLV (2) and Wyoming (2). BALANCED ATTACK: Seven BYU players are currently in double-figures in points scored this season. Three of those seven are also in double-digits for goals scored. Junior midfielder Sara Reading leads the team with 38 total points, a number that ranks fifth all-time on the Cougar single-season points list. Of the 214 points scored by BYU this season, 175 have been accounted for by these seven players: Reading (38), Maren Hendershot (36), Kim Lowe (29), Sarah Higham (25), Jeni Willardson (18), Natalyn Lewis (13) and Karen Robbins-Wonderli (16).
