BYU to Represent Mountain West Conference in 2008 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship

BYU advances to NCAA Tournament for fourth consecutive year

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - BYU will represent the Mountain West Conference in the 2008 NCAA Women's Soccer Championship. The Cougars earned the conference's automatic bid to the tournament after defeating the No. 2 seed Utah, 1-0, in the MWC Soccer Championship Final, Nov. 8, in Las Vegas, Nev.

BYU (17-5-0) will see first-round action in Provo, Utah. The Cougars will host Virginia Tech in the teams' first-ever meeting on Thursday, Nov. 13. The winner of the BYU/Virginia Tech game will play either Boston University or No. 4 USC on Saturday, Nov. 15.

BYU is making its 11th appearance in the NCAA Women's Soccer Championship and ninth as a member of the Mountain West. In BYU's last appearance, the Cougars fell to Texas, 2-0, in the first-round in College Station, Texas. The Cougars best finish in the NCAA Tournament was an Elite Eight appearance in 2003.

With BYU in the 2008 field, the Mountain West Conference now has 21 appearances all-time in the NCAA Soccer Championship. Overall, the conference holds a 10-18-3 record in the tournament.

All first and second round matches in the 64-team tournament will take place at campus sites on either Thursday, Nov. 13 and Saturday, Nov. 15, or Friday, Nov. 14 and Sunday, Nov. 16. Third-round matches will be played on campus sites Nov. 21, 22 or 23, while quarterfinal matches will be Nov. 29, 29 or 30. The 27th annual NCAA Division I Women's College Cup will be played December 5 and 7 at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C. North Carolina State University, Town of Cary and Capital Area Soccer League are the hosts of the championship.

The four No. 1 seeds in the 2008 NCAA Championship are Notre Dame, Stanford, UCLA and North Carolina. In the tournament, 30 teams received automatic bids, while 34 teams received an at-large berth.
