MWC Weekly Soccer Notes Utah and UNLV advance to NCAA Soccer Championship
Nov. 9, 2004 Utah, the MWC Championship winner, and UNLV, the MWC regular-season champion, both earned bids to the 2004 NCAA Soccer Championship, beginning Friday, November 12. It is Utah's third consecutive bid, while it is UNLV's first-ever NCAA berth. Utah (13-5-3, 3-2-1 MWC) * Utah won the MWC Championship with a shootout victory over San Diego State, 4-3. The two teams played to a 1-1 tie after regulation and two overtimes before the Utes won in penalty kicks. With the win, Utah gets the automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament, the Utes' third consecutive trip. * Utah fell to NCAA first-round opponent Colorado, 1-0, Sept. 12 in a regular-season tournament at Wake Forest. Colorado was the Utes' lone Big 12 opponent this season. * Utah is ranked No. 10 in the NSCAA/adidas West Region poll, while the Utes are receiving votes in the Soccer Buzz national rankings, and the Utes are ranked No. 9 in the Soccer Buzz West Region poll. Colorado is receiving votes in the NSCAA/adidas National poll, while the Buffs are No. 6 in the Central Region poll. * Utah is 3-1 vs. the Pac 10 this season, including a 2-1 upset of then-No. 7 UCLA, Oct. 1. The Utes have also defeated Oregon (2-0) and Washington State (4-1), while losing to Stanford (0-3). * Ten players have scored at least one goal for Utah this season. * Utah placed four players on the all-MWC first and second teams as Amanda Feigt and Tracy Stratton Garner reaped first-team recognition and Kim Lloyd and Kiley Jones earned second-team honors. Stratton Garner, Feigt and Hailey Marsh earned MWC all-tournament accolades, while Lauren Field earned the first sportsmanship award.
UNLV (12-4-2, 5-1-0 MWC) * UNLV won the MWC regular-season title and earned an at-large berth to its first-ever NCAA Soccer Championship. * The Rebels' Annii Magliulo became the school's all-time leading scorer with a goal against Air Force, Oct. 24. She now has 68 career points. Magliulo earned the MWC Offensive Player of the Year award this season. * UNLV defeated NCAA first-round opponent San Diego, 2-1, Sept. 24, in Las Vegas. Utah also played the Toreros, losing 3-0, Oct. 3 in San Diego. San Diego is currently ranked No. 21 in the NSCAA/adidas National poll and No. 5 in the NSCAA/adidas West Region poll. * UNLV has tied the school record for most wins in a season with 12, matching the 2001 squad. * Two of UNLV's four losses this year have come against ranked teams (Kansas and Tennessee), while three of the four (Tennessee, BYU and Utah) came on the road or at a neutral site. * UNLV is currently ranked No. 9 in the NSCAA/adidas West Region poll, while the Rebels are No. 10 in the Soccer Buzz West Region poll. * UNLV has scored 28 goals on the year, second-best in the MWC (Utah), while the Rebels have given up a league-low 14 goals. * UNLV's freshmen quartet of Jessica Destito, Erica Frizzell, Katie Carney and Ashly O'Harrow have combined for 11 goals and six assists. They have also scored eight game-winning goals this season. Air Force (4-13-2, 0-5-1 MWC) * Air Force upset No. 2 seed BYU in the first round of the MWC Championship and won its first game since Sept. 10. The Falcons advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament for the first time since 2001. BYU (7-10-4, 3-1-2 MWC) * BYU made seven consecutive trips to the NCAA Soccer Championship before the streak ended this year. The Cougars have never finished lower than second in the MWC. New Mexico (5-12-0, 1-5-0 MWC) * Junior goalkeeper Kristen Winters started all 17 games and set the club record for most career wins with 20, Oct. 10. She is one shutout away from tying the all-time record of 18. San Diego State (8-7-6, 3-1-2 MWC) * Goalkeeper Sophia Perez was named the MWC Championship Most Valuable Player and goalkeeper. Additionally, she was a all-MWC first-team selection. She ranks 22nd in the NCAA in goals-against-average (0.66). Wyoming (9-7-4, 3-3-0 MWC) * Wyoming's 9-7-4 mark in 2004 is the best record in the history of Cowgirl soccer. * Wyoming placed four players (one first team and three second team) on the all-MWC team. Mercy Adetoye was the Cowgirls' first-team selection.
