BYU Wins Inaugural Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Championship Hendershot named Tournament MVP.
Chula Vista, Calif. - BYU defeated San Diego State 2-1 in overtime and claimed the first-ever Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer title today at the ARCO Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. The Aztecs took an early 1-0 lead in the match after sophomore defender Fay deLeon scored on a corner kick in the 19th minute. BYU tied the match at one apiece in the 66th minute after junior midfielder Sara Reading was successful on a penalty kick. The game-winning goal for the Cougars came off the foot of junior forward Kim Lowe 6:21 into the first overtime. This was second consecutive year and third time in the last four years that BYU and SDSU have met in the title match. The Cougars won the first meeting 3-1 in 1996, while the Aztecs took the 2-1 (4 OT) victory in 1998. Both matches were played in Provo.
