2007 All-Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Teams Announced

UNLV's Carney and Wyoming's Wilson earn Co-Offensive Players of the Year Awards

Nov. 6, 2007

PROVO, Utah -

The Mountain West Conference announced its 2007 women's soccer awards today at its pre-championship banquet in Provo, Utah. The league's eight head coaches selected the all-conference first and second teams, Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year. The soccer championship begins Wednesday, Nov. 7, at South Stadium on the Brigham Young University campus.

Senior forward Katie Carney of UNLV and junior forward Tamika Wilson of Wyoming garnered MWC Co-Offensive Player of the Year honors, while San Diego State freshman goalkeeper Aubree Southwick earned the MWC Defensive Player of the Year award. Southwick was also selected as the MWC Freshman of the Year, and UNLV coach Kat Mertz collected MWC Coach of the Year accolades for the first time at the helm of the program. UNLV won its second regular-season women's soccer championship this year.

BYU and UNLV each had three players named to the all-MWC first team, while Utah and San Diego State each had two first-team honorees. Wyoming also earned one first-team slot.

Carney was tabbed as MWC Co-Offensive Player of the Year after leading UNLV to its second conference title and finishing second in the league in points (10) and goals (4) in conference games. Wilson earned the honor after leading the league in points (11), goals (5) and game-winning goals (3). Southwick earned MWC Defensive Player and Freshman of the Year honors as she led San Diego State to its best conference finish since 2000, posting a league-leading five shutouts and a goals-against average of 0.41. Southwick is the first player in MWC women's soccer history to earn two postseason individual awards in the same year.

The Rebels are the No. 1 seed in the MWC Championship, Nov. 7-10, at BYU. Action gets underway Wednesday at 1 p.m. MT.
