2008 All-Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Teams Announced
BYU's Katie Larkin and Andrea Willis Named Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year
Nov. 4, 2008
LAS VEGAS, Nev. -
The Mountain West Conference announced its 2008 women's soccer awards today at its pre-championship banquet in Las Vegas, Nev. The league's eight head coaches selected the all-conference first and second teams, Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year. The soccer championship begins Wednesday, Nov. 5, at Peter Johann Memorial Field on the UNLV campus.
Senior forward Katie Larkin of BYU garnered MWC Offensive Player of the Year honors, while BYU junior defender Andrea Willis earned the MWC Defensive Player of the Year award. TCU's Jordan Calhoun was tabbed MWC Freshman of the Year, and BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood collected MWC Coach of the Year accolades for the second time at the helm of the program. BYU won its fifth regular-season women's soccer championship this year.
Seven different institutions were represented on the all-MWC first team. BYU had four players named to the all-MWC first team, while Utah had two first-team honorees. New Mexico, San Diego State, TCU and UNLV each had one student-athlete honored.
Larkin was tabbed as MWC Offensive Player of the Year after leading BYU to its fifth conference title, but first since 2002. She finished third in the league in goals (4) and in points (8) in conference games. Willis earned MWC Defensive Player of Year honors after anchoring a BYU defense that allowed only one goal in seven conference games, while adding an assist in a win vs. UNLV. Calhoun was named the MWC Freshman of the Year after finishing third in the league in goals (4) and points (8). She led TCU to a third-place place, the team's best regular-season finish as a member of the MWC.
The Cougars are the No. 1 seed in the MWC Championship, Nov. 5-8, at UNLV. Action gets underway Wednesday at noon PT.
