Nov. 3, 1999

The Air Force women's soccer team earned its first post-season victory ever with a 5-2 win over UNLV in the first round of the Mountain West Conference Tournament Wednesday in Chula Vista, Calif.

The victory put the Falcons at 11-9 overall this season and guaranteed the team a winning record for the first time since moving to Division I in 1996. The team's 11 wins and overall record are the second-best in the seven-year history of Air Force women's soccer.

Air Force wasted little time as team captain Jennie Schoeck scored the fastest goal in school history. The third-classman (junior) from Colorado Springs' Air Academy High School scored on a lob shot from 25 yards out just 33 seconds into the game. Schoeck's third goal of the season was assisted by Morgan Bennett. Six minutes later, Beth Boyer put the Falcons ahead 2-0 when her corner kick went untouched into the net. The whirlwind of scoring continued as Kari James netted her sixth goal of the season at the 14:27 mark. Her shot to the lower left corner was assisted by Bennett.

UNLV battled back with a goal midway through the first half and another early in the second half to cut the Falcon lead to 3-2. Stephanie Rader ended the Rebels' momentum in the 64th minute with a goal from Boyer. The Falcons took a 5-3 advantage with 47 seconds left in the game when UNLV scored an own goal. Falcon keeper Kristy Kuhlman made six saves in the game. Air Force out-shot UNLV, 17-10, overall.

The Falcons return to action Thursday at 2 p.m. against top-seeded San Diego State. Air Force and SDSU played earlier this season with the Aztecs defeating the Falcons, 2-0, at the Cadet Soccer Stadium. However, since that loss the Falcons have won six of their last eight games including four over conference teams.
