PROVO, Utah -

The Mountain West Conference announced its 2009 women's soccer awards today at its pre-championship banquet in Provo, Utah. The league's eight head coaches selected the all-conference first and second teams, Offensive and Defensive Players of the Year, Freshman of the Year and Coach of the Year. The MWC Soccer Championship begins Wednesday, Nov. 4, at South Field on the BYU campus.

Junior midfielder Cat Walker of San Diego State garnered MWC Offensive Player of the Year honors, while BYU senior defender Andrea Willis earned the MWC Defensive Player of the Year award for the second consecutive year. BYU's Carlee Payne was tabbed MWC Freshman of the Year, and San Diego State head coach Mike Friesen collected his first MWC Coach of the Year accolades. San Diego State finished second in the league standings, marking the team's best finish since 2007.

Four different institutions were represented on the all-MWC first team. BYU had four players named to the all-MWC first team, while San Diego State and Utah each had three first-team honorees. New Mexico also had one student-athlete honored.

Walker was tabbed as the MWC Offensive Player of the Year after leading San Diego State to a second-place finish and a No. 2 seed in the MWC Tournament, the team's highest spot since 2007. She finished first in the league in points (10) and goals (7), and fourth in assists (2) in Conference games. Willis earned MWC Defensive Player of Year honors for the second consecutive year after anchoring a BYU defense that allowed only four goals in seven Conference games. The senior also added a goal in a win vs. Wyoming and an assist in the Cougars' victory over UNLV. Payne was named the MWC Freshman of the Year after finishing first in the league in assists (4), third in points (8) and seventh in goals (2) in Conference games.

The Cougars are the No. 1 seed in the MWC Championship, Nov. 4-7, at BYU. Action gets underway Wednesday at noon MT.
