MWC Women's Soccer Players of the Week

New Mexico's Hand and BYU's Carter honored

Nov. 3, 2008

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

New Mexico senior forward Hannah Hand and BYU senior defender Jessica Carter have been named Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Offensive and Defensive Players of the Week, respectively.

Hand, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., scored the game-winning goal in a 2-1 victory over UNLV in Las Vegas. The goal was Hand's third on the season and helped secure the Lobos a spot in the MWC Tournament. She took four shots in the game, including two on goal. The win vs. UNLV snapped the Lobos' five game losing streak to the Rebels.

Carter, a Provo, Utah, product, led BYU's defense to shutout wins over Weber State and Wyoming. She played a key role in limiting Big Sky regular-season champion Weber State to just four total shots, including only one on goal. In the 1-0 win, the Cougars held the Wildcats to their second-lowest shot total of the 2008 season. In the 1-0 victory at Wyoming, Carter held the Cowgirls to six shots on goal, while scoring the game winner in the 79th minute.
