The Mountain West Conference Women¹s Soccer Championship is just over two weeks away, but the competition for seedings will be in high gear this week. BYU is the only undefeated team remaining in the league at 4-0 and can secure the No. 1 seed if the can get by Air Force (1-2) or Wyoming (0-3) this week. The fight for the second seed heats up with New Mexico visiting UNLV on Wednesday. Both teams are currently 2-2, along with San Diego State and Utah. The Utes play at Wyoming on Thursday and at Air Force Saturday. The Aztecs host the Lobos on Friday and the Rebels on Sunday.

COUGARS RUNNING ON ALL CYLINDERS

BYU is 12-3-1 overall and 4-0 in conference play and has yet to score less than four goals in league action. The Cougars are outscoring their MWC opponents 18-3 and have recorded two shutouts. BYU has also dominated its non-conference opponents, outscoring them 36-12.

South FIELD DOMINANCE

BYU has been unbeatable on South Field and has finished its second straight regular season undefeated at home. The Cougars have not lost on South Field in 21 consecutive home matches. BYU is currently 20-0-1 on South Field the past two seasons with its lone tie coming against then-10th-ranked Southern California (1-1 on Sept. 28). The Cougars went 12-0 at home in 1999 and 7-0-1 this season. The last time BYU lost at home was on Nov. 7, 1998 to San Diego State (2-1 in ot) in the championship match of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament. The last regular season defeat on South Field was also to the Aztecs (1-0 on Oct. 24, 1998).

RECORD BREAKING REBELS

The UNLV women¹s soccer team has reached new heights in 2000. In just its third year of existence, the Rebels are breaking new ground with each match played. UNLV is 9-6 on the year, breaking its old record of eight wins set in the program¹s inaugural season in 1998. The Rebels are also 4-6 in road/neutral site matches this season. In the past two years, the Rebels never won more than three road/neutral matches. UNLV can set another school mark this week with a win over New Mexico. The Rebels are 5-0 at home in 2000 and a victory over the Lobos would give them a their highest win total ever at home.

Streaks

  • BYU holds the league¹s longest active scoring streak at 14 and win streak at five.

  • Freshman Alicia Cramer of BYU has recorded at least one point in the last four matches (three goals and four assists).

  • BYU and Utah have not allowed a goal in two games. The MWC record for consecutive shutout matches is four set by the Cougars last season.

  • Utah ended its three match losing streak with victories over UNLV and San Diego State last week.

    Hat Tricks

    Wyoming senior forward Kelly McShane tallied her second hat trick of the season in the Cowgirls 6-0 victory vs. South Alabama last week. McShane is now tied with Michelle Jensen-Peterson of BYU with two hat tricks on the year.

    MWC Quick Shots

    Air Force junior midfielder Beth Boyer recorded two assists last week and is now tied for the top spot on the Academy career assist list with 15. Boyer is just two assists shy of breaking the Falcon single-season record of eight

    BYU leads the league in every offense team category. On the individual side, BYU either holds the top spot alone or is tied for first among offensive leaders

    New Mexico goaltender Shelly Hammock has recorded five shutouts this season. She now has nine career shutouts

    San Diego State plays New Mexico and UNLV this week. The Aztecs have outscored the Lobos and Rebels 11-1 in seven combined matches since 1998

    UNLV has started slow in the first half of matches this season being outscored 19-8. The Rebels have come to life though in the second outscoring its opponents 16-12

    Utah¹s sophomore midfielder Katie Tate has been a key ingredient to the Utes this season ranking second on the team in goals (10) and assists (5). In Utah¹s two victories last week, she tallied two goals and two assists and helped even the Utes conference record to 2-2

    Wyoming matched the schools single-season shutout record with its fourth shutout of the season in the 6-0 win over South Alabama.

    Century Mark

    BYU head coach Jennifer Rockwood became the first women¹s soccer coach in the MWC to reach the 100-win mark for her career. Rockwood captured victory 100 as the Cougars defeated Milwaukee-Wisconsin, 2-0, on Sept. 23. She is currently 105-25-2 in just over five seasons in Provo. Entering this season, Rockwood was ranked fifth among active coaches by winning percentage. She has averaged 18.6 wins per season over the past five years, which ranks second behind only Anson Dorrance of North Carolina for wins per season. Dorrance has won an average of 22.2 matches per season.

    Chuck Clegg is seven wins away from his 100th career victory at San Diego State with a 93-51-5 record. The Aztecs have three regular-season matches remaining and the conference tournament.
