MWC Women's Soccer Players of the Week SDSU's Mello, UNLV's Rice and Utah's Crespo honored.
Oct. 16, 2006 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - San Diego State sophomore forward Jen Mello and UNLV junior forward Armani Rice have been named Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Co-Offensive Players of the Week, while Utah junior defender Melissa Crespo has been named the Defensive Player of the Week. Mello, a native of Pleasanton, Calif., scored both goals in SDSU's 2-0 victory over Wyoming on Sunday while scoring one and assisting on another in the 2-2 double-overtime tie versus No. 15 BYU. With her two goals on Sunday, Mello tied her career high in that category (eight in 2005) and set a new career high with 19 points. Three of her five shots for the week were on goal. Rice, a Parker, Colo., native, scored a pair of game-winners in the final minutes of UNLV's 1-0 OT win over New Mexico and 2-1 victory over TCU. On Friday night, she scored nine minutes into the first overtime to give the Rebels a 1-0 win over a New Mexico team that had allowed just nine goals all season. She also broke a 1-1 tie against TCU with a score from 15 yards out in the final two minutes of regulation for a 2-1 UNLV win. She currently leads UNLV with five goals, four of them game-winners, and three of the four game-winners were in one-goal wins. Crespo, hailing from Milpitas, Calif., started both games for the Utes in the back row, contributing significantly to two shutout victories. She leads a Ute defense that has not allowed a goal in conference play. Crespo also had two assists in two games to give Utah a 2-0 victory over Air Force, and a 3-0 win over New Mexico.
