Kofoed Reaches Goals Standard-Examiner Feature Story
Oct. 15, 2001
By Justin Johnson SALT LAKE CITY - It was a bittersweet moment for Amy Kofoed. Around 9 p.m. Saturday, the senior forward for the University of Utah women's soccer team scored her 39th career collegiate goal, eclipsing the school- record mark that she had shared with former Ute Staci Burt -- currently of the Women's United Soccer Association's Carolina Courage -- heading into the late-night contest at UNLV. Roughly 90 minutes later, her Utes had suffered a 2-1 loss to the Rebels, one that likely cost her team any chance to win the Mountain West Conference"s regular- season championship. "Coming into college, I just wanted to go out and try and make a name for myself," Kofoed said. "Each year that I"ve been here, I"ve tried to set a goal for myself at the start of the year something that I wanted to achieve during the season. "When I started this year, I knew that I was only four goals away from tying the record. It was something that I decided I wanted to do. It"s an honor to have my name mentioned with Staci Burt. She was a incredible player," Kofoed said. Kofoed"s college career carried on directly from where she left off as a 1998 graduate of Northridge High School. During her senior year with the Knights, she scored 22 of her team"s 26 goals. Her mother, Weber State co-head coach Lynn Kofoed, originally wanted her to attend Santa Clara, which is consistently ranked among the top 25 teams in the country. "I wanted her to go play at Santa Clara, but she decided that she wanted to stay close to home," Lynn Kofoed said. "It was a mutual decision for both of us that she didn"t come to WSU. We didn"t want to put ourselves in an uncomfortable position. She didn"t want to play at BYU, so Utah was the logical choice. Her brother and sister were both going there." And the younger Kofoed hasn"t looked back. She has started in 66 of 70 possible games with Utah, scoring 39 goals including 15 game-winners and dishing out 14 assists for 92 career points, which is also just shy of Burt"s record of 97. "I think she"s capable of more," Lynn Kofoed said. "No one really even thought about the record until the start of the year when they realized she was close to breaking it. She"s always more concerned about just going out and doing what she can to help her team win." "Amy"s tried to become more of a playmaker this year," Lynn Kofoed added. "Against UNLV, she kept looking to make the pass off to her teammates."
As for her post-college plans, Kofoed would like to play in the WUSA. She spent the past summer playing with the Chicago Cobras of the W-2 League.
