New Mexico's Winters Named MWC Women's Soccer Player of the Week Sophomore garners honor for first time in her career.
Oct. 14, 2002 COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - New Mexico sophomore goalkeeper Kristen Winters has been named the Mountain West Conference Women's Soccer Player of the Week after notching 1-0 shutouts against conference foes San Diego State and UNLV. This is the first weekly accolade of her career and the second for a goalkeeper in the four-year history of the MWC. Winters, a product of Lakewood, Colo. (Green Mountain HS), recorded 14 saves off of 26 shots to help the Lobos (9-5-0 overall) to a 2-0 record in conference play. In New Mexico's win over the Aztecs, she saved six shots, including four in the second half. Against UNLV, Winters had eight saves (five in the second half), holding the MWC's second-highest scoring team without a goal in the process. On the season, she leads the Mountain West in shutouts (six) and is second in saves (66).
