1999 Conference Standings

Utah Wins Inaugural Intraconference Women’s Soccer Match: Utah won the first-ever Mountain West Intraconference match last week as it defeated New Mexico 1-0 in Salt Lake City. Senior forward Staci Burt scored the lone goal of the match, which also marked the first-ever goal in a league contest, at the 42:22 mark of the first half. The 1-0 win by the Utes was also the first-ever shutout in an intraconference match.

1999 Conference Schedule/Results

Player of The Week: San Diego State senior forward Lori LaCoursiere was selected as the Mountain West Conference Women’s Soccer Player of the Week. LaCoursiere scored two goals and two assists for a total of five points as the Aztecs went 2-0 in the opening weekend of conference action. SDSU won both matches on the road, defeating Air Force 2-0 and Wyoming 6-0. The Aztecs are currently 9-4 and continue league play this week with Utah on Thursday and BYU on Saturday.

LaCourisere, of San Jose, Calif. (Leland High School), scored her first goal of the weekend on a penalty kick at the 73:46 mark to secure the Aztecs 2-0 victory. In Sunday’s match at Wyoming, LaCoursiere assisted on the game-winning goal by Megan Mattes at the 17:19 mark of the first half. She added her own unassisted goal in the 39th minutes to extend the SDSU lead to 2-0. LaCoursiere finished the day with another assist at the 50:58 mark of the game as Serena Pearson scored to make it a 4-0 Aztec lead. SDSU won the match 6-0.

LaCoursiere leads the team with seven goals this season and is tied for the team lead in assists with eight. She is the Aztecs’ all-time leader in assists (38), goals (48) and total points (134).

This is the first player of the week honor for LaCoursiere this season and the second for SDSU.

First Place on the Line: Even though only a week of conference play has gone by, a crucial game for top billing in the league takes place this weekend in San Diego. After the first week of Mountain West Conference play, BYU and San Diego State remain the only two unbeaten teams and will meet on Saturday. The Cougars shutout both Utah (1-0) and New Mexico (4-0) this past weekend, while the Aztecs followed suit with a 2-0 win over Air Force and a 6-0 victory against Wyoming. The most recent meeting between the two teams was last year in the WAC Tournament championship match in Provo, Utah. The Aztecs came away with a 2-1 win in four overtime periods.

SDSU leads the series with BYU 4-2. The Aztecs have won the last three meetings against the Cougars and BYU is 0-2 all-time in San Diego.

National Rankings: BYU dropped in all three national polls this week. In the latest NSCAA Coaches’ Poll the Cougars fell 11 spots from No. 9 to No. 20 after going 2-0 last week and improving its record to 13-2. The loss to Harvard on Oct. 4 was not included in last week’s rankings and therefore accounted for the drop in this week’s poll. In the Soccer America poll, BYU dropped seven notches from No. 7 to No. 14. The Soccer Buzz poll also had BYU falling from No. 9 to No. 11 this week.

San Diego State reentered the Soccer Buzz poll this week at No. 24. Two weeks ago the Aztecs No. 24 before losing to Kentucky and falling out of the poll last week.

1999 National Rankings

Regional Rankings: BYU and San Diego State both appear in the Soccer Buzz West Regional Rankings this week. The Cougars, who were No. 3 last week, moved down one position to No. 4, while the Aztecs remained at No. 7.

National Statistics: BYU is No. 11 in the latest NCAA national statistics rankings in scoring offense. The Cougars have scored 46 goals for a 3.07 goals per game average. The 46 goals in 15 matches is tied for the fifth highest goal total in the country through Oct. 10.

Individually, Wyoming junior goalkeeper Amanda Vandervort is No. 12 in the country in saves per game, averaging 8.46. In 13 matches, Vandervort has made 110 total saves.

High Scorers: The Air Force Academy and San Diego State both racked up six goals apiece in victories this past weekend. The Falcons won their first conference match of the season with a convincing 6-0 win over UNLV, while SDSU defeated Wyoming 6-0 in Laramie.

The six goals are the most by AFA this season and the second highest goal total in school history. The Aztecs six goal total was also their highest output of the season and the most goals against a Mountain West Conference team in school history.

Hat Trick: BYU junior forward Sara Reading recorded her first collegiate hat trick in the 4-0 victory over New Mexico. The hat trick was the first of the season by the Cougars and the second in the year in the conference. Her first two goals of the match came within 90 seconds of each other at the 10:31 and 11:49 marks of the first half. Reading tallied her third goal in the 74th minute of the match.

Cougars Have Utes number: The 1-0 BYU win over Utah on Saturday was the Cougars sixth straight against the Utes. Since the two teams starting playing soccer against each other in 1995, Utah has yet to win a match.

Offense of the Week: San Diego State went 2-0 this past week defeating Air Force (2-0) and Wyoming (6-0). The Aztec offense scored eight goals on 39 shots. It was the third time this season that SDSU has scored five or more goals in a match. The Aztecs have now won six of the nine matches this season by two or more goals.

Defense of the Week: BYU and San Diego State share the defensive honors of the week as both teams shutout its opponents in the first week of conference action. The Cougars blanked in-state rival Utah (1-0) and New Mexico (4-0) and allowed just 13 shots, eight on goal. BYU has now shutout six opponents this season.

The Aztecs shutout Air Force (2-0) and Wyoming (6-0), allowing 13 shots in the two matches combined, and just four shots on goal. The shutouts were number four and five for SDSU in 1999.

Overtime is a Good Time: Mountain West Conference teams have been involved in 13 overtime matches this season. Of those 13 matches, MWC teams have won 11. Utah and San Diego State lead the league in overtime matches with three. Utah has won all three of its contests, including two that went into double overtime. SDSU is 2-1 in overtime matches.

Home Sweet Home: Mountain West Conference teams have compiled a 29-12-1 home record thus far in the 1999 season. BYU is the only team undefeated at home (8-0), while SDSU (4-1) and UNLV have lost just once (4-1). The last time BYU lost at home was on Nov. 7, 1998 to San Diego State (2-1 in ot) in the championship match of the Western Athletic Conference Tournament.

Attendance Remains High: BYU drew a crowd in excess of 1,000 for the fourth time this year with 1,955 fans flooding into South Field for the in-state rivalry match with Utah on Oct. 9. This was quite a feat for the BYU women’s soccer program as the match was being played head-to-head with the BYU football game against Cal. The Cougars largest crowd of the year was for the Washington match as 2,079 fans attended.

New Mexico holds the Mountain West Conference attendance record thus far through the 1999 season with a crowd of 2,168 for the Fairfield match on Sept. 17.

Conference Scoring: Mountain West Conference teams have a 27-goal scoring advantage over their nonconference opponents this season. League teams have 148 goals to the opponents’ 121. MWC teams have 10 nonconference matches remaining this season.

BYU leads the way in scoring for the fifth week in a row with a 3.07 goals per match average. San Diego State remains second with a 2.54 average followed by Utah (1.69), New Mexico (1.50), Air Force (1.46), UNLV (1.42), and Wyoming (1.00).

MWC vs. Nonconference Opponents: Mountain West Conference teams have a combined 42-34-3 (.564) record against nonconference opponents in 1999. The .564 win percentage is the highest of the year against nonconference opponents.

San Diego State Registers First MWC Win: On the first official day of competition as a member of the Mountain West Conference, the San Diego State women’s soccer team captured the first victory by any team in any sport for the conference. The Aztces played UCSB in the first-ever sporting event in the Mountain West Conference on August 27, 1999 and won in style with a 5-1 win over the Gauchos.

Mountain West Conference Tournament: The inaugural Mountain West Conference Women’s Soccer Championships will take place Wednesday-Saturday, November 3-6 in San Diego, Calif. All seven teams will qualify for the tournament with the No. 1 seed receiving a first round bye.
